It’s our priority to make sure we can save all the natural teeth of your smile. However, there are instances when a tooth extraction is the best option for your overall oral health. In these cases, we make the process stress free and painless here at McMillan Family Dental.
Teeth Extractions
When a tooth has become decayed or damaged, our first priority is to restore it to its natural function and appearance through the use of crowns, fillings, or other dental treatments. If the damage is too extensive or the decay is too progressed for our first methods to work, it may be in the patient’s best interest to extract the tooth. Teeth extractions prevent the tooth from further decay or damage which could have adverse effects on the jawbone or gums.
We typically administer local anesthesia to numb the area involved so you experience no pain. Using special tools, we remove the tooth after the anesthesia has taken effect. Extractions are typically very quick, and you feel only a small amount of pressure.
The most important part of a tooth extraction is the recovery process after the procedure. It’s vital to let the blood form a clot by biting down on a gauze pad. Once the blood clot has formed, avoid drinking through straws and eating hot or chewy foods. Ice packs are recommended on the cheek where the extraction took place to reduce swelling. To help keep the wound clean, gently rinse the area with warm salt water.
