Sleep apnea is a sleeping disorder that causes patients to experience a cessation in breathing during sleep. These pauses can last from a few seconds all the way up to 30 seconds. This occurs due to the relaxation of the muscles in the back of the throat. The relaxation of the muscles is what causes the abnormal snoring sounds, such as gasping or choking sounds. To compensate for this, your body will subtly wake itself up to either reposition or reactivate the muscles in the back of your throat. This will resume your breathing, but it will prevent your body from reaching the deep levels of sleep you need to feel fully rested.
At McMillan Family Dental, we offer oral appliances to combat this. Oral appliances are devices that are worn over the teeth while you sleep. They work by positioning your jaw in a more forward position, promoting open an airway and preventing those pauses in breathing. Without the pauses, your snoring will become much quieter and much more normal sounding, and it will also allow you to reach those deep levels of sleep you need to feel fully rested.
